Dear Religious Education Families,
With great regret I must inform you that we will not be able to offer the Vacation Bible School this summer. This has been such a successful program at Holy Redeemer for fourteen summers, enriching the lives of our younger children as well as the older youth who volunteered in the program. It saddens both the staff and volunteers to discontinue such a popular program.
In January, we were informed by our Diocesan Office of Safe Environments that there are new requirements issued by the Florida Department of Children and Families for summer camps that we are unable to fulfill. This meant that we would not be able to offer our Vacation Bible School in the summer.
We immediately began researching other options for a Youth Service Week for the middle and high school youth of our parish which could be offered within the DCF guidelines. Amy Belisle, with the help of Desma Cowhill, has been assembling a week of service projects for this age group. The schedule of events and all of the details will be released prior to the registration on April 22nd & 23rd.
Last week, we were informed by the Diocesan Office of Catechesis and Youth Ministry that there has been a change, and VBS can be offered at parishes in our Diocese. However, we have given our time and effort to creating the Youth Service Week, and do not want to abandon it at this point. For this reason, we will not be offering VBS this summer in order to have the Youth Service Week.
Next summer, we do plan to offer VBS again, as long as we have the adult volunteers to lead the program. We hope that the Youth Service Week will be a great success, and that both programs will have the support of our parishioners to be offered in the summer of 2018.
I welcome your remarks, ideas and participation as a response to these changes.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Director of Religious Education
