BaptismIn Baptism we receive new life in Christ. Baptism takes away original sin and gives us a new birth in the Holy Spirit. Its sign is the pouring of water.
Baptism is the sacrament that frees man from original sin and from personal guilt, that makes him a member of Christ and His Church. It is thus the door to a new and supernatural life. Baptism is a true sacrament instituted by Christ. It is administered by washing with natural water and at the same time invoking the Most Holy Trinity. Anybody, even an unbeliever or a heretic can validly administer baptism. Since it confers grace by the signs' being properly carried out children can and should be baptized even while still infants. Baptism is necessary for salvation. Baptism effects the remission of original sin and actual sins and of all punishment due to sin; it confers sanctifying grace, membership in Christ and in the Church and the obligation to obey the Church's laws, and give an indelible character. |
Process |
We are happy to welcome new members to our Catholic faith community. Requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for a child involves a serious obligation and faith commitment on the part of the Parents and Godparents. It is highly recommended that parents be active registered members of Holy Redeemer for at least three months before beginning the baptismal preparation process. We encourage parents to begin this process prior to the birth of their child. Both parents and godparents must attend a Pre-Baptism class in their respective parish or at Holy Redeemer. Classes at Holy Redeemer are generally held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm. Please call the office to register for the class.
After the necessary paperwork is filled out, Pre-Baptism class is attended and completed, Godparents Eligibility Forms are received (Sponsor Certificates), then the Baptism will be scheduled at your convenience. The Baptism registration form may be downloaded below or obtained from the church office. Infant Baptisms are usually celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month after the last Mass. The only exception is major holy days such as Christmas and/or Easter. No baptisms will be performed during special occasions. It is important that parents follow the Baptismal guidelines as dictated by church law. Older children, teens and adults seeking Baptism are welcomed into our Rite of Christian Initiation programs where they will come to understand the fullness of the sacrament. Please contact our office for more information. ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS We receive many requests for parishioners to be Godparents or Sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at Holy Redeemer. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an "active member" of Holy Redeemer. An "active member" is:
These are the main factors that will be considered in making the determination. |
